Season 3

Welcome back to Season 3 of “ Ask Dr. Leila Podcast ”, where every smile tells a story, and every question unlocks a world of dental discoveries! I’m your host, Dr. Leila Hariri, and I’m thrilled to dive back into the fascinating world of oral health with you.

Today, we’re diving into a crucial topic often neglected during pregnancy: oral health, prioritizing your smile during this incredible journey is vital for both you and your little one. So, grab your water bottle, because hydration is key for oral health too, and let’s get started! –

The Interconnectedness of Your Smile and Pregnancy:

Many expecting mothers prioritize prenatal vitamins and healthy eating, and rightly so! But oral health deserves equal attention. During pregnancy, hormonal shifts and other factors can significantly impact your gums and teeth, increasing the risk of gum disease and cavities. But here’s the good news: prioritizing oral care throughout your pregnancy benefits both you and your baby.

Potential Risks of Poor Oral Health:

Studies have shown a clear link between untreated gum disease and an increased risk of premature birth and low birth weight. A 2020 study by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, led by Dr. Karen J. Westling, found that pregnant women with severe gum disease were twice as likely to deliver preterm babies compared to those with healthy gums.

This highlights the importance of taking care of your gums, not just for your smile, but for your baby’s health too. Additionally, a 2017 study published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology by Dr. Maria Akram and her team at Columbia University Medical Center, revealed a connection between poor maternal oral health and cavities in their children later on. Remember, a healthy mom often translates to a healthy baby, and that includes oral health!

Common Oral Health Concerns During Pregnancy:

Now, let’s address some specific concerns you might encounter:

  • Gingivitis: This inflammation of the gums caused by plaque buildup is quite common during pregnancy due to hormonal changes. It can lead to bleeding gums, discomfort, and even sensitivity.
  • Morning sickness: The acidity of vomit, unfortunately, can erode tooth enamel, making you more susceptible to cavities. A 2016 study in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry by Dr. Michael G. Newman and colleagues from the University of California, Los Angeles, showed an increased risk of enamel erosion in pregnant women experiencing frequent vomiting. Extraoral hygiene care is crucial to counteract this effect.
  • Dietary changes: Cravings for sweet treats are common, but frequent sugar intake can feed the cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. Remember, moderation is key!

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene During Pregnancy:

Don’t worry, I’m here to help! Here are some simple steps to keep your smile healthy and happy:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily: It helps strengthen your enamel and fight cavities. Choose one with a mild flavor if morning sickness bothers you.
  • Floss daily: Plaque loves to hide between your teeth, so flossing is essential to remove it and prevent gingivitis. Don’t worry, there are various flossing options available, so find one you enjoy!
  • Limit sugary drinks and snacks: As tempting as they are, sugary treats fuel cavity-causing bacteria. Opt for water, unsweetened tea, or fruits instead. – Drink plenty of water: Staying hydrated is key for overall health, and your mouth loves it too! Water helps wash away food particles and keeps your mouth moist. –
  • Schedule regular dental checkups: This is crucial! Inform your dentist about your pregnancy, and they can tailor their approach accordingly. Remember, most dental procedures are safe during pregnancy, so early intervention is key.

If you experience any dental problems like pain, bleeding gums, or sensitivity, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They can address the issue before it worsens and ensure both your comfort and oral health. Remember, early intervention is key!

Beyond the Basics: Additional Tips and Insights:

Now, let’s go beyond the basics and explore some additional tips and insights:

  • Consider using pregnancy-specific toothpaste: These often have milder flavors and may contain additional ingredients beneficial for pregnant women.
  • Rinse with a gentle mouthwash: Look for one that is alcohol-free and specifically designed for sensitive gums. It can help freshen your breath and kill bacteria.
  • Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush: This will be gentler on your sensitive gums, especially if you’re experiencing gingivitis.
  • Talk to your doctor: If you have any concerns about your oral health or the medications you’re taking, don’t hesitate to discuss them with your doctor. They can provide guidance and ensure your overall well-being.
